(re)Introducing the 9/80 Workweek
This isn’t the first time I’ve had a job with this kind of a schedule, but after an all-hands meeting (how I love those) on Thursday, the Big Wigs said that they were going to implement the 9/80 workweek starting in the beginning of September.
For anyone unaware of what a 9/80 schedule is, instead of working 8 hour days 5 days a week you work 9 hour days for 4 days a week.. sort of.
Think of it as a two-week grouping kind of a thing. Week 1 you work the normal 5 days, but 4 of those days are 9 hour shifts and that Friday is an 8 hour shift. The following week you work 4 days, 9 hours each day. So the total hours for week 1 come out to 44 hours, and the week 2 hours come out to 36 hours. 44 + 36 = 80 hours, which is what you get if you work 5 days a week for 8 hours a day. So you’re still working* technically the same amount of time as a 40 hour week, but just working more per day so that you can get a day off.
I liked it when I had this schedule before, but this new place better not try to screw you out of holidays. They said during the meeting that if a holiday happens to fall on an off-Friday that it’s just the luck of the draw. No, that’s working for free guys and Adam Lawton doesn’t work for free. He is not opposed to getting paid for doing nothing however.
Still, I wouldn’t mind working extra during the week and just having every Friday off. Or working even more during the week and having every Thursday and Friday off. Or just working 24 hours on Monday and taking all the other days off. It’s people like me who abuse the system. Oh well, that’ll be the dream until I can find a way to be self-employed.
